Mitigation Activities in Most Vulnerable Camps

Due to the heavy rains predicted over the next few months, a number of camps are at risk of flooding and landslides. The Mitigation Task Force is continuously assessing mitigation works needed in the 150 vulnerable sites through an environmental engineering team. The team consists of members from IOM, UNOPS and Shelter Cluster.

CCCM, Early Recover, WASH and Shelter clusters will be contacting agencies bi-weekly to coordinate mitigation activities. These activities will likely include: cutting internal drainage, improving external drainage, securing hazardous areas (fencing), and possibly sandbagging. The camps needing minor or moderate mitigation works include:

We would appreciate if your agency can contribute in improving the conditions of these camps before the heavy rains. A detail list of the camps and organizations who have already offered to support camps is attached for your further information. If you are already working in these areas or these camps, it might be easier for you to respond to mitigation needs. Please contact me if you are able to support these sites, and a site engineering report can be forwarded to you with a Google Earth map.

A presentation of the most vulnerable sites will be made at an Inter Cluster Mitigation Task Force meeting on Tuesday, 2nd June at 4.00 PM at OCHA meeting room in the UN Log Base. We would appreciate your participation at this meeting if you are able to support some of the ongoing camp mitigation work.

We urge you to support the mitigation work required to ensure the safety of the camp residents before the onset of heavy rains. We look forward to your valuable support..
